The Black Rhino Foundation (BRF) promotes and encourages conservation of the highly endangered black rhino.
We are a development arm for a number of organizations that protect and preserve the rhino species through building and maintaining of secured preserves, sanctuaries and national parks. We focus our efforts on creating awareness and generating funds through membership drives, special events, educational programs and merchandising.
At present, the species is on the brink of extinction. Over 90% of black rhino have been ruthlessly poached in the last 30 years. This is the fastest decline of any large mammal in recorded history. It was predicted that by the turn of the century the species would be extinct in the wild. But with the efforts of many organizations such as the BRF, the rhino continues to survive. Today, there are an estimated 3,000 black rhino remaining down from 65,000 in 1970. Poaching remains a constant threat to the animal, with populations in Zimbabwe currently under daily attack due to the country's instability.
Program support has been focused on efforts based in Kenya, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
